It was created by American landscape architect Charles Alexander Jenks in 1989 in the city of Dumfries. His wife, Maggie Keswick, a specialist in the gardens of Japan and China, received the 1988 Portrack House as an inheritance. Together they decided to build a miniature of the entire universe – to combine botany with mathematics, astronomy, geometry, physics, chemistry, and to translate these ideas into landscape design.
